Lock-out at Wimco Chennai factory

CHENNAI, June 12

WIMCO Ltd has declared a lock-out at its safety-match making unit in Chennai, according to information provided by the company to the stock exchanges on Tuesday.

When contacted by Business Line, company officials were not available for comment.

According to union sources, the lock-out had been declared without warning or prior notice. Issues relating to bonus payments and festival advances were a point of contention.

But workers were reporting for duty and production had been on. However, the workers had stopped sending some of the raw materials such as skillets, the outer covering of the safety-match box, to Kolkata. The issue had also been taken to the court, they said. But the management had opted for lock-out. The workers had been caught by surprise early on Tuesday when the company put up the notice.

Conciliation efforts were on, and the workers were likely to represent the situation to the State Government, they said.

It may be recalled that the workers had stopped work in January over bonus and festival advance payment.

At that time, union sources had said that they wanted a commitment from the management regarding payment of bonus and festival advance during the current year.

The management appeared to have decided against making the payment. The workers had not been paid bonus and festival advance last year, and wage settlement talks had also been inconclusive.
