Tata Engg May CV sales rise 82 pc

MUMBAI, June 11

TATA Engineering has reported total sales of 12,453 vehicles in the domestic market in May 2002, an increase of 12 per cent over the same month the previous year. Sales of commercial vehicles, which began showing an upward trend at the start of the current fiscal, rose by 82 per cent last month to 7,230 units.

"This growth was led by a substantial 102 per cent increase in the sale of medium and heavy commercial vehicles. Sales of light commercial vehicles at 2,245 units showed a 49 per cent growth over May 2001," an official statement said.

The company sold 2,749 medium and heavy commercial vehicles and 1,494 light commercial vehicles in May 2001.

For the first two months of 2002-2003, total sales were up by 8.6 per cent to 22,109 units, including a 59 per cent rise in cumulative commercial vehicles sales at 13,673 units.

The passenger vehicle business (including cars and utility vehicles) registered total sales of 5,223 units in May 2002, amidst a decline in industry sales by 12.4 per cent. For the first two months of 2002-2003, total passenger car sales touched 8,436 units, while industry sales dipped by 10.6 per cent.

Tata Engineering sold 4,849 units of the Indica in April-May 2002, with 3,018 units sold last month alone. On passenger car sales, the statement said the production of the Indica was hit "to a great extent by a power crisis which affected the industrial belt of Pune during the last week of the month. The Indica plant was coming out of a planned closure for the Tata Sedan switch-over activities."

The company's utility vehicle sales went up by almost 60 per cent over April 2002 at 2,205 units, still a decline of 8 per cent compared to May 2001 levels. Safari sales rose by 65 per cent on year-to-year basis to 316 units, last month.

"Cumulative sales in the segment for the two months of the financial year amounted to 3,587 units, which represented a decline of 4.4 per cent over the same period last year, against a segment decline of nearly 8 per cent," the statement said.
