Knitwear & Hosiery Tirupur exporters seek board to boost textiles Our Bureau
COIMBATORE, June 5 THE Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) has called upon the Tamil Nadu Government to set up a high-level `textile development board' to nurture the State's textile economy which occupies a pivotal position by accounting for one-third of the country's textile exports. TEA has said that formation of such a board comprising members of the textile industry and representatives of the State and Central Government would be timely to prepare the State's textile sector to the changing trade environment in the wake of phasing out of the textile quota regime in the post-MFA (multi-fibre agreement) era. The textile development board could be assigned the task of studying the scope of attracting new investments into the State's textile sector, creating necessary infrastructure for the development of the textile industry, assessing the problems facing the industry and suggesting remedial measures. The President of TEA, Mr A. Sakthivel. who met the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa today, presented a memorandum in this regard to the latter. During his meeting with the Chief Minister, Mr Sakthivel also expressed his gratitude to the State Government for according sanction to the private water supply project for Tirupur being proposed under the new Tirupur Area Development Corporation Ltd (NTADC) which will meet the long-felt need of the Tirupur knitwear industry. The TEA representation to the Chief Minister, which has outlined certain priorities for the State Government in its planning to facilitate further growth of the State's textile sector, wanted the State Government's support in securing funds from the Centre for building infrastructure. The State should help the Tirupur industry to get funds to the extent of 2 per cent of the f.o.b., value of shipment made from Tirupur from the Central exchequer that could be spent on infrastructure projects such as power and roads.
