More judges, courts `will stave off lawlessness'

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, June 4

THE Minister of State for Personnel, Administrative Reforms and Small-Scale Industries, Ms Vasundhara Raje, has said that the benefits in increasing the number of judges, augmentation of the capacities of courts and use of information technology far outweighed the costs involved as the benefits were in the shape of better deterrence against lawlessness, improved enforcement of laws and the rule of law.

Speaking at the concluding session of the `Conference of Law and Home Secretaries of States and Registrars General of High Courts' here, Ms Raje, said that the benefits of augmentation of courts could hardly be quantified in monetary terms as these were part of the basic infrastructure of the State.

The Minister referred to some State Governments like Rajasthan, which have been opposing the creation of additional judge strength by three or four judges in the Rajasthan High Court and called upon such States to review their stand as the additional strength was justified on norms of per judge disposal of cases in that High Court.

The Minister also said that the Institute for Smart Governance, set up by the Department of Administrative Reforms, could play a facilitating role. She also suggested taking citizens' perspective in all reform exercises.
