Consumer Activism Old-age home, next Vinson Kurian
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city-based Consumer Protection and Guidance Society, which runs the Margin Free chain, has stumbled on another innovative idea - a home for the aged which would prospectively house a creche as well. "A generation-next concept for the generation-passing,'' is how Mr Ravikumar and Mr Jayapal would like to describe the new initiative - something which seeks to reaffirm the society's social commitment. The Consumer Protection and Guidance Society has acquired 2.75 acres of land in nearby Pallipuram to set up the old-age home. "We have invested Rs 75 lakh already into the project. Ours is going to be a revolutionary concept in that the facility will offer free accommodation for a limited period for anyone who would like to leave behind their aged parents or children safe before proceeding on travel,'' Says Mr Jayapal. Ditto for somebody who faces a problem dealing with a visitor coming in at short notice. The new facility will spare him the bother of finding alternative accommodation for the visitor (the host being responsible for proving the latter's credentials) elsewhere in the city. It is scheduled to open in May. The latest initiative is being financed mostly from internal accruals of the Margin Free enterprise.
