DSP plans to close down blast furnace

KOLKATA, April 1

DURGAPUR Steel Plant (DSP) is planning to close down its blast furnace (BF) No. 1 by May this year, bringing on its modernised BF No. 3 to boost productivity.

DSP sources said that although after bringing on BF 3 the first blast furnace would run for a while, it would be shut down once BF 3 stabilises.

At DSP, which has four BFs - it was originally planned to modernise BFs 1, 2 and 4 during 1994-95. However, just prior to the modernisation, a thorough overhauling of BF 1 was completed in 1993, and at that time, it was planned to run the unit for around 10 years.

Thus, the modernisation of the second and the fourth blast furnaces were completed as part of the main package by 1996-97.

In the meantime, modernisation of the third blast furnace was commenced using the spares that had arrived from Russia for Unit 1.

Sources said that now the job is completed and the unit can be brought on stream.

After rounds of the VRS run by Steel Authority of India Ltd, DSP has reduced its manpower considerably and now it has a workforce which is adequate only for three units and Unit No 1 will have to be run with skeletal manpower.
