Mumbai, April 30

The State Government and political parties are moving heaven and earth to make Maharashtra Day, which falls on Saturday, a thumping success.

In Mumbai, the State machinery would hold six major events celebrating the golden jubilee of the formation of the State right through the day.

A special function is scheduled at Hutatma Chowk memorial near Flora Fountain in South Mumbai in memory of the 106 martyrs who laid down their lives during the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement that led to the formation of the State on May 1, 1960.

From all the 35 districts, freedom fighters will carry water from the local rivers and soil from the historical places, to the memorial site.

The official function of the State Government is being held at Shivaji Park grounds in Dadar and it includes an exhibition called Suvarna Maharashtra Darshan and a laser show, to be held at Girgaum Chowpatty beach at the end of the Marine Drive.

Political parties are in the race to outshine each other and to woo the “Marathi Manoos”.

Shiv Sena has already collected 24,200 bottles of blood as a part of its blood donation drive to mark the occasion. The party has also planned a musical evening where Ms Lata Mangeshkar, will sing after a long gap at the request of the Shiv Sena Supremo Mr Bal Thackeray.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena led by Mr Raj Thackeray is on a different tangent and has organised a food festival and cooking competition to mark the day. The festival called Maharashtra Majha will continue for five days and regional cuisines from Konkan, Khandesh, Vidarbha and Marathwada would be served to the food connoisseurs.

The Congress would be holding a night-long cultural programme at Jamboree Maidan in Worli, while the Samajwadi Party has planned a Mushayara (cultural programme) at Malad.
