New Delhi, Oct. 15 Just a few days before the Supreme Court takes up the Ambani brothers gas dispute for final hearing, the Government has decided to strengthen its legal team. Official sources told Business Line that this move to fortify the Government’s legal team was taken at the behest of the Law Ministry. Government has intervened in the Anil Ambani group company, Reliance Natural Resources Ltd (RNRL), and Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) case to protect its interest as the owner of mineral resources. RNRL, an Anil Ambani Group company, is fighting with the Mukesh Ambani-led RIL for supply of gas at $2.34 per mBtu based on a family agreement between the two brothers. Officials said that at an informal meeting of a core ministerial panel comprising – the Finance, Law , and Petroleum Ministers – it was decided that all measures have to be taken to protect the Government’s interest in the matter. It has been decided to replace Government counsel Mr T. S. Doabia, retired judge, with Mr Vivek Tankha, Additional Solicitor General. Mr Mohan Parasaran, Additional Solicitor General, will continue to lead the team. The Finance Minister was given an update on the case, the hearing of which is to take place on October 20. Officials said, “There would be no deviation from the current position of the Government. All the Government departments concerned as well as public sector company, NTPC, will speak in one voice in the matter.” “There is no conflict with NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) and the Government will protect the power company’s interests,” the sources said.
