Society & Development Industry & Economy - Water States - Andhra Pradesh Move to set up more WaterHealth centres Our Bureau
Announcing this here on Friday, Dr Tralance Addy, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of WHI, said the `Blue Revolution' is aimed at providing potable drinking water to millions of poor people living in rural areas at affordable cost.
JOINT EFFORT
The organisation will rope in corporates, governments, communities and non-governmental agencies to start the projects all over the country. Using a technology based on ultraviolet (UV) water purification system, these centres disinfect water of viruses and bacteria, the prime sources of many water-borne diseases. The system would send UV rays through the water container destroying DNA of pathogens. As a result, the DNA would be locked up, preventing pathogens from replicating themselves.
NEGLIGIBLE COST
It will cost just about Rs 90 a person a year to get access to safe water. While local bodies would chip in 20-40 per cent of the total project cost, banks would lend the remaining 80-60 per cent. "We provide the infrastructure. The local communities own the assets and pay for using water," Mr Manoj Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Naandi Foundation, said. The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private investment arm of World Bank, invested $1.2 million in WHI for the project.
