Education States - Andhra Pradesh AP wants new IIT to offer agri engg Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Dec 24 After the Centre agreed to locate one of the three new IITs in Andhra Pradesh, the State Government wants `agriculture engineering' to be included in the academic programme of the upcoming institute. After discussing with agriculture scientists, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, Minister for Agriculture and Civil Supplies, spoke to Chief Minister Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and persuaded him to write a letter to the Prime Minister and the Union Minister for Human Resources.
APPEAL TO CENTRE
The letter would appeal the Centre to make the IIT focus on subjects such a soil and water engineering, water resources development and management, farm mechanisation and power. Referring to the Jalayagnam programme, Dr Reddy said that lakhs of acres would get irrigation facilities once these projects are completed. "Keeping this in mind, it is imperative to study issues such as post-harvest technologies, adding value to the farm produce and improving productivity." The focused approach by an institute of IIT's stature would help find solutions for the problems faced by the agriculture sector.
