TN sets up panel for agriculture development

The Tamil Nadu Government has constituted a committee to suggest measures for the development of agriculture, according to an official press release.

The 15-member State-level agriculture development committee will be headed by the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, and includes the Agriculture Minister, and representatives from agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, dairy, veterinary and micro irrigation, the release said.

The Secretary and Commissioner of Agriculture will be convenors.

The committee will also have 16 special invitees including the vice- chancellors of the agriculture and veterinary universities, and the Secretaries from the Departments of Finance and Food and Consumer Protection, the release said.

In addition to this committee, the Government has also constituted a special team headed by the Agriculture Minister, Mr Veerapandi S. Arumugam, and former member of the Assembly from Chidambaram, Mr K.S. Azhagiri, officials from the Agriculture Department and the Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, according to the release.

The committee will look into issues and opportunities in agriculture sector and suggest measures to increase agriculture production and fixing remunerative prices for agriculture produce.
