Visakhapatnam , Dec. 18

The management and the employees of the Visakhapatnam steel plant deserve commendation for their concerted efforts in moulding it into one of the best plants in the country and achieving mini-ratna status, according to Mr R.S Pandey, Secretary, Steel.

He visited the plant on Monday and interacted with the representatives of the management and unions. The plant had recently been given the National Energy Conservation Award by the Union Ministry of Power in New Delhi and it was a praiseworthy achievement.

THRUST AREAS

Mr Y. Sivasagara Rao, Chairman and Managing Director, said the plant had achieved a remarkable turnaround in recent years and "it is concentrating on promoting the usage of steel in rural markets by appointing district-level dealers." The other thrust area was developing a special economic zone with user industries, he added.

The unions submitted petitions to the Secretary seeking captive iron ore mines for the plant besides promotions and incentives on the occasion of the silver jubilee of the plant to be celebrated in February.

The Steel Secretary inaugurated an R&D project named Pilot coke oven.
