Mumbai , Dec 11

L&T has won the Rs 5,400-crore Delhi airport modernisation contract. The company said that the order, secured against international competitive bidding, involves design and construction of a passenger terminal and a 4.43-km runway, which would be one of Asia's longest.

The airport is being rebuilt by the GMR-led Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd.

The new passenger terminal, called Terminal 3, will be built adjacent to the existing international terminal.

Terminal 3 will have a total built-up area of 4.8 million sq ft. When completed, it will house over 130 check-in counters and 70 emigration desks.

It will have the capacity to handle 37 million passengers a year, more than double the existing volume of traffic, the company said in a release.

Mr A.M. Naik, Chairman of L&T, said that the company's strategic plan involves focusing increasingly on projects of large magnitude in critical sectors such as airports, ports, powers and upstream gas and oil.

The new runway will be equipped with the CAT III B landing system, allowing for landing with a minimum visibility of only 50 m.

L&T will also build primary infrastructure support facilities such as aprons, remainder taxiways, cargo terminals and aircraft maintenance facilities.

According to the release, the company will also carry out associated work for the airport that will be commissioned in time for the Commonwealth Games.
