Software Industry & Economy - SSI Marketing - Strategy Sun Micro to tap tier III towns, SMBs V. Rishi Kumar
Hyderabad , Dec. 11 Sun Microsystems India is pursuing the emerging small and medium businesses (SMB) with a range of solutions helping them to both upgrade and transition to the Internet. The company is expanding its footprint in the country with the launch of operations across 18 tier III cities and towns over the year. This strategy is aimed at closer proximity to businesses located in the region. The Regional Director-South, Sun Micro India, Mr Ganesh Mahabala, told Business Line that the requirement for these companies is industry-specific and calls for customisation, which can best be handled by local presence.
Growth potential
The SMB segment is perceived to hold immense potential for growth from a Sun India perspective. This is because about 50 per cent of the business comes from this segment, which has emerged as the fastest growing segment for Sun in India. Of the $7.7-billion SMB market in India for IT infrastructure, the addressable market from the Sun India perspective is about $1.2 billion and this presents exciting opportunities, he added. The company had earlier launched Sun's Opteron-based products in the Galaxy range and recently added Sun Fire servers and Sun Ultra Workstations that combine the advantages of performance, lower energy and help better manage IT infrastructure. Small companies with offices located in multiple centres are faced with the issue of seamless connectivity that would help them harness the power of the data residing in multiple locations. It is here that a lot of server consolidation was happening and Sun India was aggressively tapping into this segment, he added.
