Seeks to uplift 1,000 villages every year

Bangalore , Dec. 10

The Karnataka Government on Sunday announced a Rs 3,000-crore investment in the State's Suvarna Gramodaya project, which will seek to uplift 1,000 villages in the State every year.

Pooling of funds

"There are 21,000 revenue villages, of which 1,000 have been selected.

"Funds worth Rs 1,000 crore have been earmarked for the scheme, while Rs 2,000 crore that have already been earmarked for various programmes in the Budget will be pooled in," said Mr M.R. Sreenivasa Murthy, Principal Secretary, Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj.

He was speaking at the announcement of a partnership between the Council for Advancement of People's Action and Rural Technology (CAPART) with Indian Institute of Science in the city.

The integrated plan for each of these 1,000 villages would be finalised after inputs from NGOs approved by CAPART and panchayati raj institutions.

The Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CST), according to the MoU, will provide technical aid to New Delhi-based CAPART in water and sanitation, household energy efficiency and alternate energy technologies, information system for village knowledge centres and agro-processing.

Resource base

CAPART also announced the setting up of an Institute for Poverty Alleviation and Rural Technology in New Delhi, which will offer a national resource base on rural technologies. The institute would have a digital library, networking, research, documentation services and a knowledge portal.

New beginning

The partnership with CST, which involves a funding of Rs 84.70 lakh spread over a period three years, heralds a new synergised beginning aimed at achieving rural prosperity, said Ms Veena S. Rao, Director General, CAPART. Need-based and location-specific technologies will be developed and disseminated through NGOs working in rural areas.

The MoU will be followed by a series of workshops.
