Infrastructure TN yet to identify land for Chennai airport expansion Our Bureau
Chennai , Dec. 6 The Tamil Nadu Government is yet to identify land for the expansion of the Chennai airport, said the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, in the Assembly on Wednesday. Responding to a concern raised by a member that residents in Chennai suburbs surrounding the airport feared being evicted to make way for the airport expansion, the Chief Minister said that the location for the project is yet to be finalised. The State Government is looking at options well away from the existing facility, he said.
Spreading rumours
Mr Karunanidhi said that the public should not pay heed to rumours spread by `middlemen' who would profit from such fears. In some projects, "for the good of many, a few could be affected" but the Government will look after those affected. So too would be the case of the airport project. But the rumours of land having been identified for the project are baseless, he said. Earlier, the Airports Authority of India and the Tamil Nadu Government have initiated discussions for expanding the Chennai airport. Last year, the then AIADMK Government had announced that it has agreed to hand over 1,475.5 acres land to the north of the existing airport free to the Airports Authority of India for a new international airport in Chennai. This was after the Civil Aviation Ministry had said that it had approved the project.
