Considering the growth in the construction sector, the building industry should adopt modern technologies to meet the demand, Mr Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chief Operating Officer of Infosys Technologies, has said.
Speaking at the valedictory function of the national convention of the Builders Association of India here, Mr Gopalakrishnan said that the industry needs to use new technology and systems very effectively as productivity must increase to world-class levels.
He pointed out that there would be significant demand for office space, factories, apartments etc for the next few years. As the GDP is expected to grow at 8 per cent in the next few years, the industry needs to take appropriate steps to grab the opportunity as well as to meet the demand in the housing sector.
He also said that there is a need to look at public private partnership for building roads, ports and airports. This is happening and needs to be scaled up, he added.
The development of manpower is very critical for any industry to grow. The industry needs to create training initiatives and organisations should train semi- skilled manpower such as masons, electricians and plumbers.
They need to be certified such that there is confidence in their capabilities. This is similar to what is being done in the IT industry, he said. He also stressed the need to adopt green building standards and proactively implement these in all projects considering the long-term impact of development on environment.
