Chennai , Dec. 2 The Institute of Logistics of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is to hold its biennial Conference on Automotive Supply Chain management - AutoSCM India 2006 on December 12-13, 2006, in Chennai. Auto SCM Conference mainly focuses on Supply Chain Management as a strategic differentiator and a key value driver for the automotive industry along with emerging trends, success stories, supply chain challenges, performance metrics, IT supports, export packaging challenges, outbound after market distribution and more. The Indian automotive industry is growing fast. The number of vehicles manufactured in India has risen from 2.4 million units in 1993-94 to 8.7 million units in 2004-05, according to a press release from CII. The automotive industry has emerged as one of the prominent manufacturing sectors of the Indian economy, with the turnover around $22 billion. The industry contributes 4 per cent of the GDP, providing direct employment to about 0.45 million people. SCM is a critical element for success in an automobile company and it evolves as the most significant value driver for companies to derive competitive advantage. The way supply chains are configured and managed determine the cost to market, time to market and responsiveness of organisations to changing customer expectations and competitive landscape. In today's competitive scenario of global outsourcing, SCM plays a crucial role that is utilised by the world's leading automobile manufacturer, logistics and distribution companies.
