Tech firms in the city are revving into the auto sector.

Several demonstrated their prowess in the domain at developer conferences organised in the city. Products that use older technologies such as sonar and newer designs for a wireless car are being sighted as the firms realise the market potential.

Software services firm HCL Technologies has been investing in designing products for the auto sector for three years, and work has been on since a year now, said a HCL official, demonstrating a lane departure warning system at chipmaker Texas Instrument's developer conference here on Friday.

The company has also designed an auto high beam recognition and a GPS- based navigation device.

The navigation device was previously built for the marine industry, but has been ported for the auto industry, he said.

Bangalore-based MindTree's ultrasound obstacle detection system was also sighted at the conference. The firm built a reference design for a device that can alert the driver when the car comes within 10 metres of any obstacle.

Using sonar (ultrasonic wave), it calculates the distance of the car from an object, and velocity (using Doppler effect) and flashes a warning on a display on the car's dashboard.

The company also offers `Ethermind', a telematics application using Bluetooth wireless data transmission and a handheld for automotive diagnostics.

In the future, cars may use WiFi (wireless fidelity) for video streaming and may use newer wireless radio technologies such as UWB (ultra-wide band) to transmit data to multimedia components in the car, said a MindTree official.
