Potential for radiation processing tech seen

Mangalore , Nov. 29

Radiation processing technology is gaining acceptance in industries such as food processing and sterilisation of medical products, according to Dr A.K. Kohli, Chief Executive of Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology (BRIT), Mumbai.

Inaugurating a seminar on `Applications of radioisotopes and radiation technology' - jointly organised by Mangalore University, National Association for Applications of Radioisotopes and Radiation Industry, Mumbai, and BRIT - here on Wednesday, he said that five such plants, fully in private sector, have been built with help from BRIT.

The Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission will inaugurate one such plant in Bangalore on December 4.

"Applications of radioisotopes and radiation in industry have diversified considerably, thanks to the ever increasing appetite of the industries for more effective, better quality, more reliable and cost-effective technology," he said.

Stating that some of the major ports in the country use radiotracer for sediment transport study, he said this would help in keeping the dredging costs to the minimum. This technique has been used in Kolkata, Kochi, Chennai and Mumbai ports.

Though more than 5,000 radioisotopes have been identified, only 150 are in active service of society. "Like per capita consumption of electricity of a country is considered as an indicator of development, consumption of isotopes has become another indicator," he said.

Dr Kohli expressed confidence that there is lot of potential for expansion of radioisotope applications in the country.
