AP mulls low-interest loan for ryots

Hyderabad , Nov. 26

After introducing `pavala vaddi' scheme (loans at 3 per cent interest rate) for women self-help groups, the Andhra Pradesh Government is seriously contemplating a similar scheme for the farming community.

The Government would set up a committee comprising experts from the financial and agricultural sectors to discuss the proposal and suggest modalities for finalising a scheme.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has reportedly broached the issue with Mr Sharad Pawar, Union Minister of Agriculture, Food and Public Distribution, here on Sunday.

Official sources said Dr Reddy asked the Centre to bear 30 per cent of the burden by way of grants. "We will bear the remaining 70 per cent," he said.

The sources said the Government was quite happy with the success of the `pavala vaddi' scheme that came in handy for women SHGs. It also helped in reducing the dependency on moneylenders.
