Where are all the BoxNs?

If Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) recently faced problems in regard to the availability of imported coal routed through Visakhapatnam port, it was largely due to the non-availability of BoxN wagons, according to Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT). Till the third week of this month, the Railways, according to a statement issued by VPT, supplied 1500 BoxN rakes as compared 1600 BoxN rakes supplied in the corresponding period last year.

The statement pointed out that there was a spurt in imported wheat and fertiliser traffic in the port. As per the government policy, the evacuation of food and fertilisers must get priority over other commodities and, accordingly, adequate wagons had to be moved into the port. However, the wagons used for transporting wheat and fertilisers are covered wagons, not the BoxN types required for transportation of imported coal.
