TAP AVENUES: Mr Bharath Krishna Shankar, Chairman & Managing Director, Aparajitha Groups, Madurai, addressing a meeting of Business Line Club at ICFAI National College, Madurai. — G. Moorthy

Madurai , Nov. 24

To gain a rise in life, one need not be born rich but necessarily must understand the values at workplace. While work is a means to express oneself, workplace is an opportunity for every individual to establish one's identity and a platform for creating values by the company, Mr Bharath Krishna Shankar, Chairman and Managing Director, Aparajitha Groups, Madurai, said here.

Initiating an interactive approach to address on `Values at workplace' at a Business Line Club meeting held at The ICFAI National College, Mr Bharat Krishna Shankar said 20 ago the choice for the individuals were limited and a paradigm shift has taken place with the process of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation taking the centre stage. Splendid opportunities have emerged for individuals to live a fuller life.

A workplace does not afford choices as happens at various stages in life. No short cut works there. As with games, a workplace also has rules. Winning is as important for the individuals as for the company, to survive and consolidate. What matters most for this among the people who work are the attitudes in oneself, ability to manage relationships and the capacity to bear stress revealed in fitting oneself with the culture the company evolves in a competitive scenario.

5 important values

Stating that many values could be cited as constituting the cultural fabric of a company, Mr Bharath Krishna Shankar mentioned of five important values as perceived by him, necessary in an individual to succeed in a work place — an openness in thinking, empathy, maturity while responding, trust developed through consistent action and patience.

Mr T. Giritharan, Regional Co-Ordinator, ICFAI, presided. Dr T. Arulvelan, Principal, and Mr M. Jegadesh Kumar, Assistant Regional Manager, The Hindu, were present.
