Foreign Banks Government - E-Governance States - West Bengal HSBC makes case for modern property registration system Our Bureau
Kolkata , Nov. 23 International banking major HSBC has drawn the attention of the West Bengal Government to the need to institute a modern system of property registration in the State. The bank, whose top officials met the Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadev Bhattacharya, on Wednesday, made a strong case for an online registry mechanism. The State, felt Ms Naina Lal Kidwai, Group GM and Country Head, HSBC India, would gain considerably if it set the ball rolling on this front. An online system wouldhelp in rooting out cases of fraud, she told newspersons here. The bank, which said the Chief Minister reacted to the suggestion favourably, will follow up its meeting with a special note to the Government on the subject. The bank, which has over 24,000 personnel on its rolls, employs about 550 people in Kolkata. On the offshore business side, it engages about 2,000 people, a number that may be increased by 2,000 or so. Among the other issues that came up during the 40-minute discussion was the impact of bandhs on IT/ITES businesses. It will not be in the interest of these businesses if international clients keep wondering why unusual events are happening in a particular centre, Ms Kidwai said.
