Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 19

The triennial conference of the International Society for Tropical Root Crops will begin in the city on Monday.

The week-long event will focus on `root and tubers for sustainable development — issues and strategies.' The conference, which is being organised by the Indian Society for Root Crops and the Thiruvananthapuram-based Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, is intended to provide a forum for scientists and practitioners in the field to share their knowledge and experience, says a press release.

AGENDA

Issues that will be addressed during the conference include value addition for food, nutrition and health; crop improvement and genomics for sustainable development; biodiversity and conservation; and trade and technology commercialisation, the release states.

The event's organisers expect the conference to throw up recommendations that will help in decision-making and in identifying strategies to strengthen public and private partnerships in the field, the release adds.

Around 250 delegates, including 80 from outside India, are expected to participate in the event. The Kerala Governor Mr R.L. Bhatia is scheduled to inaugurate the conference on Monday evening.
