Global warming

The Stern report has started a much-needed debate on the effects of global warming and pushed the issue to the top of the agenda in many forums.

One cannot ignore the double standards adopted by world leaders on the question of development and its effects on living standards and the environment.

The developed world has reached this stage of prosperity by exploiting the earth's resources.

They are now, however, talking about the ill-effects of the development taking place in China, India and Brazil — countries that are aspiring to improve their economies and raise living standards.

The only solution is to slow the world economy and this requires the consent and co-operation of all major players.

Will the United Nations lead the way on this critical issue?
