AP cable operators seek simplified tax regime

Our Bureau

Plea to introduce single-window system

`The civic bodies, the commercial taxes department and the Electricity Dept are all collecting tax and levies from cable operators.'

Visakhapatnam , Nov. 8

The Andhra Pradesh State MSOs' (master signal operators) Association has urged the State Government to simplify and streamline the tax structure and introduce the single-window system for tax collection. Currently, different departments collect the taxes.

After the meeting of the State executive of the association here on Wednesday, its president Mr S.Y. Srikumar, said there was confusion over the status of the industry.

"Entertainment tax is being collected, as ours is considered an entertainment industry. Service tax is also being collected. The civic bodies, the commercial taxes department and the Electricity Dept are all getting into the act. There is no clarity and sometimes, as in Visakhapatnam, the municipal corporations are serving notices asking the operators to pay up dues for several years and going to the extent of cutting the cables," he complained.

No clarity

He attributed the confusion to the lack of comprehensive legislation on the issue and clear-cut directives from the Government. "The Government should streamline the procedures, introduce licensing for cable operators and issue specific guidelines. Preferably, we want single window system," he said.

A memorandum would be submitted to the State Government next week on the issue. The association also deplored the move of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) in serving notices for the collection of tax dues amounting to Rs 7 crore.

Recently, the cable wires were cut. The agitated operators halted the cable transmissions for half a day and temporary truce could be restored, though no solution was found to the problem. "We do not want recurrence of such incidents. Let the State Government step in and clear the air," he added.
