The Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) is coming up with a new mega project for the Indian System of Medicine (ISM) here with the support of the Central Government.
AIMS, run by the Matha Amritanandamayi Mission with a super-speciality hospital and medical college, has already started speciality clinics for ISM at its hospital in the city, where treatment is provided for cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy, Dr A.K.K. Unni, Coordinator, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospitals, told Business Line.
Officials from the Central Government have already visited AIMS and held discussions on creating facilities for ISM here during the 11th Plan. Details of the new project are being worked out, he said.
He said that the proposed mega complex exclusively for ISM by AIMS would have departments for biotechnology and all main branches of ayurveda such as panchakarma, charasutra etc, he said. Ayurveda treatments would be made available in the original form and the complex will also be developed to promote health tourism in the State by providing complete treatment including rejuvenation therapy.
However, Dr Unni suggested that the central assistance for ISM should be made available to AIMS directly and not routed through the State Government.
A research centre for nanotechnology has also started functioning here.
