Highway open but choked

Freight movement by road to and from Paradip port resumed from around the middle of October after having remained suspended for nearly one and half months due to breaches on the National Highway 5A caused by floods.

However, the resumption of road movement brings no cheer to the port authorities as the traffic snarl remains as bad as ever because of the indiscipline of a section of truck operators. The problem has been aggravated by the work going on to widen NH5A.

The port generally receives 2000 trucks a day — 1500 bringing in iron ore and another 500 or so chrome ore for exports — and another 300 evacuate imported coke. However, due to the traffic snarl on the NH5A, several hundred trucks are stranded at any point of time. The port authorities feel helpless.
