`Semiconductor policy will attract investments'

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, said that the immense pull of information technology has motivated educational institutions. The State Government was committed to skill upgradation and infrastructure improvement.

New and time-bound infrastructure projects were in the pipeline, plans are on for fully-equipped industrial estates and for the comprehensive development of Chennai city.

Semiconductor policy

The Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, said the semiconductor policy would attract investments in photovoltaics, LCD panels and semiconductor. The UPA Government's policy has helped add over six million new telecom subscribers a month and create a base of over 175 million subscribers.

Flextronics plans

Earlier at a press conference, Mr Mike McNamara, Chief Executive Officer, Flextronics, said the Sriperumbudur facility complements the six other industrial parks it has in Brazil, Europe and China.

The $ 200-million park being set up by the Singapore company will be a base for production of mobile phones and telephone infrastructure products. Production of mobile phones is expected to commence by December, according to Mr Peter Tan, President and Managing Director, Flextronics Asia.
