Flender unit to make high-speed gearboxes

Flender Graffenstaden, a French company, will roll out the first of the high-speed gearboxes for captive power plants from its unit here this month.

Flender Graffenstaden's unit in Chennai is its first outside France, and it operates in India as a division of Winergy Drive Systems, a manufacturer of windmill drives, owned by Siemens AG.

Dr Peter Leoni, President, Flender-Graffenstaden S.A.S. (France), told presspersons that the unit has the capacity to make high speed gear boxes for a range of captive power plants in the capacity of 500 KW to 30 MW. It supplies gearboxes to leading turbine manufacturers such as Siemens, BJEL, Skoda, Mann Turbo and Elliot Ebara.

Mr P.L. Muthusekkar, General Manager, Winergy Drive Systems India (P) Ltd, said that the product range covers the most popular 8-25 MW range in the captive power plants. The unit has a capacity to manufacture over 150 gearboxes a year. These would be needed in power plants put up by industries such as cement, sugar, steel and refinery.

Mr V.C.S. Velumani, Director, Winergy, said that investments of Winergy and Flender Graffenstaden in Chennai were about Rs 80 crore and an equal amount would be brought in soon.

Flender has also set up a facility to test the gearboxes at speeds of up to 12,000 rpm with an option to upgrade to 21,000 rpm. It has online systems that enable customers monitor the test.
