Chennai , Nov. 3 Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) has appointed a network of 96 district-level dealers to reach steel to the rural areas, according to Mr H.S. Chattwal, Director - Commercial, VSP. He told the press here on Friday that currently rural areas in India consume about 2 kg of steel per person per year, as opposed to urban areas where it is around 77 kg per person per year. The government has set a target of increasing this number to four kg per person per year by 2020. This can only be made possible through promotional and marketing efforts, and by using steel in the construction of storage bins, low cost steel houses, agricultural implements, schools and panchayat buildings, hospitals, and steel bullock carts. He added that steel has an advantage over conventional construction because it is wind, cyclone and earthquake resistant. In terms of production, the company would look to enhance the capacity of the plant from the present level of 3.5 million tonnes to 6.3 million tonnes by 2009-10 in two stages. An investment of Rs 8,692 crore would go into this project, which was approved by the Government on October 28.
