The Hindu Business Line : Cognizant to expand infrastructure

Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation, the US-based IT services provider, will spend $200 million (Rs 900 crore) in India in the next two years on infrastructure expansion. This would help the company double its infrastructure and seating capacity in India.

The Nasdaq-listed company plans to add over 3 million sq ft to create capacity for over 30,000 new employees. Currently, it has 3 million sq ft of space — both leased and owned — in India with a seating capacity of 30,000 people. Of the 35,000 people it employs globally, around 27,000 are in India, said a company official.

Cognizant will expand infrastructure in Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune. These campuses are planned in areas designated Special Economic Zones, according to a company press release.

Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2007 and continue through 2008. In addition , Cognizant will continue to lease additional new facilities throughout India to meet its employee growth requirements, the release said.

"As we plan for the next phase of growth, we are focused on building the scale to address the (global) needs of our businesses," Mr Gordon Coburn, Chief Financial Officer, Cognizant, was quoted in the release.
