New industrial policy to be announced soon

Chennai , Nov. 2

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, has urged industry to support the academic institutions in education and vocational training to enhance skill levels among the students.

Addressing the National Executive Committee of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), he said that a skilled labour force, employable by the industry, was key to industrial development.

FICCI's member industries should support institutions such as the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics where the students need modern industrial training. The State is looking forward to active support from industry, he said.

Tamil Nadu is for economic development with a human face — where economic development translates into opportunities for the poor. The focus should also be on the uplift of the local communities through skill training, Mr Karunanidhi said.

Later this year, a new industrial policy would be announced and it would reiterate the State Government's support to economic development. Competition was not just among industries but also among State Governments to attract investments. Tamil Nadu will be the front-runner in attracting investments. It would support the manufacturing and the service sectors, he said.

The FICCI President, Mr Saroj Kumar Poddar, made a presentation on strategies for economic development — blueprint for growth and Tamil Nadu vision 2011, which suggests a three-pronged strategy to make the State a favoured destination for investments.

Speedy decision making in allotment of land, power and water, and other statutory clearances; administrative reforms aimed at e-governance, transparency, single window approvals and framing a long-term stable policy; and creating a brand image for Tamil Nadu to attract investments are the ways forward, according to FICCI.
