Plan details Govt proposes project be set up in the low-lying wetlands of Amta. It could be set up as a joint venture or in the co-operative sector. It is expected to provide direct employment to around 30,000 people. Kolkata, Nov. 2 The Salim Group of Indonesia is keen to invest in a fish farm-cum-export project in West Bengal. The proposed fish farm is likely to be spread over 10,000 hectares and is estimated to entail an investment of $2 million, according to the West Bengal's Minister for Fisheries, Mr Niranmoy Nanda. Speaking to newspersons after making a detailed presentation to the representatives of the Salim group here on Thursday, Mr Nanda said the State currently produces 12 lakh tonnes of fish every year. Despite this, however, about 70,000-80,000 tonnes of fish is imported from other States to bridge the demand-supply gap here. Since the proposed project would produce one-lakh tonnes of fish every year, this gap could well be bridged. Besides, fish processing and export would be undertaken. According to Mr Nanda, the State Government has suggested that the project be set up in the low-lying wetlands of Amta in Howrah district. It could well be set up as a joint venture or in the co-operative sector. It is expected to provide direct employment to around 30,000 people. A team from the Salim Group will soon come to Kolkata to discuss the project in detail with State Government officials, the Minister said.
