IBM to open centres in Beijing, Pune

To provide service oriented architecture-based solutions

Bangalore , Nov. 1

IBM has announced opening of two new development centres in Beijing, China and Pune, to cater to rising demand for service oriented architecture (SOA)-based solutions.

SOA is about designing and developing solutions that make business-sense, rather than the technology-centric "packaged" solution approach. The Pune centre will employ 500. The two centres will have a combined force of 1,000, who will focus on developing solutions and services for the world.

IBM's recent acquisition of Webify gave the firm immediate entry into SOA tools for the healthcare and insurance industries. The firm is developing tools for the insurance, healthcare and government verticals, and will enter into the telco, retail and automotive sectors soon, said Mr Ray Harishankar, IBM Fellow and Global SOA Strategic Asset Development Leader, Global Business Services, IBM Corporation.

While the Pune centre will work on SOA solutions for the insurance industry and healthcare (supported by IBM Labs in Hyderabad), the Beijing centre will develop services for the government, banks, telecom and customised solutions for Japan. The centres were part of the $1 billion investment announced by the behemoth for this year.

IBM is moving from a labour-based model to an asset-based one, announced Mr Jeby Cherian, Head- Global Business Solutions Centre, IBM India.

He said that SOA had changed the strategy of the company, which previously used to just put more people on a project to develop a solution faster. Now, with a pre-configured template that fits 80 per cent of a client's requirements, the company is able to put fewer people on the team and yet deliver the solution faster to the client.
