The Karnataka Government has set up revolving funds in fisheries co-operatives to make fisherwomen self-reliant in their activities, according to the Karnataka Fisheries Minister, Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty.

Speaking at the `Suvarna Karnataka' celebrations in Mangalore on Wednesday, Mr Shetty said that around 70,000 fisherwomen are involved in fish marketing and processing activities in the State.

To make them self-reliant, the Karnataka Government has come out with the `Matsya Mahila Svavalambana Yojna'.

Under this, fisherwomen will be given necessary financial assistance to carry out day-to-day activities such as marketing and processing of fish. For implementing the scheme, the Government has set up revolving funds in fisheries co-operatives.

Stating that the Government has been distributing loans at four per cent interest to farmers, fishermen and weavers, he said that 43,377 beneficiaries have taken loans to the tune of Rs 218.52 crore so far.

Mr Shetty, who is also Minister-in-charge of Dakshina Kannada district, said that two medium industries in the district have come forward to provide training and jobs to the unemployed youth in the region.

In addition, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) - a Dharmasthala-based NGO - has come forward to provide training to the youth in various areas of activities.

The Minister also honoured 45 persons with Suvarna Karnataka District Rajyotsava awards. Prominent among them are Mr M.R. Vasudeva, Airport Director, Mangalore; Dr L.H. Manjunath, Executive Director, SKDRDP; and Mr M.N. Rajendra Kumar, President of Karnataka State Apex Co-operative Bank Ltd. In addition, six Government officials were honoured on the occasion.
