Tea prices fall at Coonoor auctions

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Nov. 1

Prices generally dropped by Rs 2 a kg when the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) resumed here yesterday after the Diwali-Ramzan festival holidays.

Because no auctions were held for the last 15 days, the volume offered was huge. The total of 12.2 lakh kg offered this week was the second highest so far in 2006. But, the demand was not forceful enough to absorb the volume at high prices.

Quotations held by the brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 44.50 to 46 a kg for the plain leaf grades and from Rs 60 to 64 for the brighter liquoring grades. They ranged from Rs 45 to 47 for the plain dust grades and Rs 64 to 70 for the brighter liquoring grades.
