Mr Nirupan Sen, West Bengal's Minister for Commerce and Industry, performed the brick-laying ceremony of the coke oven battery of the Rs 1,650-crore Hooghly Met Coke & Power Co Ltd at Haldia on Tuesday. Others present on the occasion included Dr T. Mukherjee, Deputy Managing Director, Tata Steel.

Being set up by Tata Steel — with the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Ltd having a token equity stake in the company — the plant will have the capacity to manufacture 1.6 million tonnes of met coke annually. The power plant that is being set up would have the capacity to produce 120 MW.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sen said it was necessary to facilitate the setting up of manufacturing enterprises in West Bengal. With regard to the Tatas' small car project, he said that land at Singur would be handed over to the company within the next fortnight.
