IBM unveils language software

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Oct. 27

IBM India Research Lab has released Sensei language assessment software — a Web-based interactive software that helps improve pronunciation and grammar. Based on IBM's Via Voice speech recognition tool, Sensei spots mistakes in pronunciation and corrects them.

Designed for easy learning, it allows students to interact with it as if they are playing an online game. This is especially useful for people who are reticent with a tutor. IBM India Research Lab has demonstrated a working prototype of the solution.

The firm's BPO, Daksh, is already using it to improve language skills. Researchers at the laboratory plan to make further advancement to this project by dwelling on student-oriented content, cultural content, structured immersion pedagogy, and speech technologies. This tool could benefit the service, education, hospitality, travel and tourism industries.
