The Kanara Small Industries Association (KSIA) at Baikampady Industrial Area in Mangalore has urged the Karnataka Government to develop another industrial area in Mangalore.

In a memorandum to the Karnataka Small-Scale Industries Minister, Mr Shivananda Naik, the KSIA President, Mr K. Ramachandra Bhat, said the Baikampady Industrial Area is fully occupied now, and there is good demand from upcoming entrepreneurs for the industrial land. This demand will increase with the establishment of special economic zone here. As a result, there is a need for developing a new industrial area in the close vicinity.

Mr Bhat said that around 800 acres of land adjacent to the present industrial area could be used for the development of industrial land.

He claimed that the Baikampady is the second largest industrial area in Karnataka. The area provides jobs to nearly 5,000 people. Of them, more than 50 per cent are women.

Referring to the new Industrial Policy of the State, Mr Bhat said inclusion of Mangalore taluk in zone three in the new policy is not appropriate. Mangalore cannot be considered at par with Bangalore and Mysore in zone three.
