Rain brightens prospects for Nilgiris tea

P.S. Sundar

Helped bushes develop healthy `two leaves and a bud' structure

Coonoor , Oct. 26

Continuous rains in the past 10 days have brightened the prospects of tea harvest in the Nilgiris. About 48 cms of rainfall has been recorded in the past 10 days, with the intensity being more in Coonoor and its surroundings. Tea pockets all over the Nilgiris have received good showers. The intensity was more in Coonoor and Kotagiri taluks.

The showers have helped the bushes to develop healthy `two leaves and a bud' structure which the planters cherish the most. "This sort of a leaf development will improve the quality", said Mr Boriah, a grower.

Blister blight

But, the absence of adequate sunshine is causing concern to the growers. "This weather poses threat of blister blight infestation. That can affect the health of the leaves and hence lower the harvest as also the quality of the leaves. In turn, it could upset the prices", a tea scientist told Business Line.
