Discoms are gearing to meet the highest ever demand in the coming season. To partially meet power demand for rabi season

Hyderabad , Oct. 25

The 210-megawatt Rayalaseema thermal power project (RTPP) is likely to be commissioned next month and is expected to partially meet the increased power demand during the ensuing rabi sowing season.

Another unit of 220 MW will also be commissioned in early 2007, adding about 420 MW to the State grid.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister's office, the new plant is likely to partly meet the heightened demand projected by the State administration.

The energy demand is poised to touch 175 million units per day as against 130 million units during the same time last year.

HIGHEST DEMAND

While the AP Transco and the distribution companies are gearing up to meet the highest ever demand in the coming season, the Chief Minister, Dr Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who reviewed the power position today, instructed the power sector officials to expedite some of the ongoing projects.

AP Genco was directed to monitor the schedules of ongoing and proposed power projects.

The Chief Minister questioned the wisdom of the previous regime in opting for gas-based projects, when coal was abundant.

Dr Reddy directed the Power Ministry to monitor the progress of new power projects and reiterated that seven-hour power supply would be provided to the farm sector.

Vijayawada unit

In addition to 420 MW from RTTP expansion, the 500 MW stage IV of Vijayawada thermal power station will be commissioned by August 2008. The Chief Minister said that an additional capacity of 6,153 MW of power would be added within six years, making it a power-surplus State.

The expansion cost is estimated at Rs 23,660 crore, to be part funded by Power Finance Corporation and Rural Electrification Corporation.

Alongside, Dr Reddy reviewed the progress of 2,100 MW combined cycle gas-based project near Karimnagar to be completed in three phases - March 2009, September 2009 and May 2010; and other projects, including 500 MW Kakatiya thermal power project, 500 MW Kothagudem stage and 500 MW Nagarjunasagar Tail pond dam.
