Supply chain problems at Chennai airport

Our Bureau

Chennai , Oct. 20

Delay in handing over import cargo at the air cargo complex in Chennai airport has created supply chain problems for many importers. The delay in a number of cases was over 72 hours, said trade sources.

Heavy rains during the last few weeks have also added to the woes of the trade, as cargo such as electronic goods (laptops and mobile phones) are left exposed to the elements, sources said.

The growth in import volumes over the past year without the required infrastructure has resulted in about 300 tonnes of cargo lying in an open area every day. On most of the days, palletised cargo off loaded from the aircraft is not accepted here but is taken back to the parking bays and left there. There also seems to be some difficulty in tracing the parcels, said a trade source. Despite appeals at various forums, this problem has not been addressed.
