Law firms' plea for space

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Oct. 19

The Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) has called upon the Government to create alternative commercial space for law firms before sealing their current offices in the Capital. The SILF has also drawn the Government's attention towards emerging challenges before the Indian law fraternity as the Indian legal services sector gets opened up.

"Opening up of the Indian legal services sector to foreign law firms will cause serious damage to the Indian law firms. There are also issues relating to reciprocity in the matter of right to practice and recognition of law degrees. With such impediments and handicaps, how do Indian lawyers and particularly law firms meet the challenge of foreign law firms entering India?" said Mr Rohit Kochhar, Secretary, SILF.
