447 star tortoises seized at Bangalore Airport

The Customs Department today seized 447 star tortoises at the Bangalore Airport. Star tortoises are banned from export under the Wild Life Prevention Act.

The Customs Officers, Bangalore in association with the Central Industrial Security Force intercepted the contraband in the early hours today. According to an official release, tortoises valued at Rs 67 lakh were handed over to the Forest Authorities to be left in their natural abode.

The tortoises, which were transported from Chennai and bound for Kuala Lumpur via Sri Lanka, were meant to be sold for use as pets.
