Godrej Sara Lee Ltd will distribute its mosquito repellant products for free and at a discount to low-income groups in areas affected by dengue and chikungunya.

"We are going to make free donations of our product through NGOs (non-government organisations) across the country," said the Godrej Group Chairman, Mr Adi Godrej.

Tie-up with NGOs

The company is to tie-up with NGOs in Delhi and Kerala to distribute mosquito coils, lotions and mats for free. Educative materials such as pamphlets on the do's and don'ts to avoid mosquito-borne diseases will also be circulated.

In addition, the company will also flag-off vehicles to distribute coils and lotions in the affected areas at half the market price.

"Coils and lotions available for Rs 20-30 will be made available at Rs 10," said Mr Mahendran, Managing Director, Godrej Sara Lee.

"We are starting with 20 vans - 10 in Delhi and 10 in Kerala," he added.

This initiative is for a three-month period.

"Studies conducted by our research centre on the causes of various vector borne diseases have identified the need for preventive measures, including use of mosquito repellants to protect against infection. Through this drive, we will attempt to reach maximum households with the message," said Mr Godrej.

Godrej is spending Rs 8 lakh on this initiative and an additional Rs 50-60 lakh on an advertising campaign to educate people on using such repellants.
