SW Rly parcel earnings zoom in Sept

The Hubli-based South Western Railway (SWR) collected Rs 5.02 crore as parcel earnings in September 2006 as against Rs 1.55 crore in September 2005, recording a growth of 229 per cent.

A press release by SWR said here on Friday that the total number of parcel van units and parcel vans with high capacity loaded was 454. This is the highest-ever loading after the inception of SWR. As many as 14 millennium rakes were loaded last month as against nil in September 2005.

Quoting Mr P.N. Shukla, Chief Operations Manager of SWR, the release said the railways' focus is on to identify destinations of higher demands and provide service to larger network of cargo carriers. He said SWR ran scheduled cargo trains from Bangalore to Delhi and Bangalore to Guwahati. This paid off an earning of Rs 14.7 crore in 2004-05 and Rs 22.4 crore in 2005-06 to it. On express cargo business, SWR has set a target of Rs 100 crore during 2006-07.
