The two-day Green Building Congress started here on Thursday with speakers highlighting the importance of conservation of materials and promoting an eco-friendly living environment.

Growing response to the concept is reflected in its increasing footprint from a modest 20,000 sq.ft. in 2003 to ten million sq.ft. expected by end 2008, said Mr Prem C. Jain, Chairman, Green Building Congress.

In his address at the Congress organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Karnataka, here on Thursday, Mr Jain said that a variety of green building projects were coming up in the country encompassing residential complexes, exhibition centres, hospitals, educational institutions, laboratories, IT parks, airports, government buildings and corporate offices.

"Green building materials and products are vital in advancing the green building movement. Today there is a paradigm shift in the way that materials and equipment are evaluated with regard to their efficiencies,'' he said.

Phenomenal growth seen

Mr ParasuRaman R., Vice Chairman - World Green Building Council, said, green building materials were poised to grow phenomenally in the next five to six years. He said the market for green buildings was estimated to grow to $4 billion from 2012 onwards, of which $3 billion account for green building materials and equipment.

Mr Subir Hari Singh, Principal Secretary - Housing, who inaugurated a two-day exhibition coinciding with the Congress, said the Green Building concept was an excellent initiative.

It would have tremendous impact in the conservation of resources, he added.
