Kolkata , Oct. 11

Essar Oil expects to complete the first part of the exploration drilling in Eastern Ranigunj coal bed methane block in West Bengal in early 2007.

Scheduled to drill 12 core holes, the company has already drilled three and is expecting to complete the rest in next four months. According to sources, the company has pressed three coring rigs to complete the drilling on a fast track basis.

The core holes are drilled to ascertain the presence of coal seams and recoverable CBM reserves. The recoverable reserve will be further validated by drilling of test production wells.

According to the minimum work programme, the company would drill 15 test wells following completion of core hole drilling.

Essar Oil holds 100 per cent interest in the CBM Policy-I block, RG (EAST)-CBM-2001/1, spread over 500 square km. According to Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, the block is having an estimated CBM reserve of 42 billion cubic metre.
